I began this piece in 2013 during a printmaking class at Grinnell College. Using a small glass plate, I applied and removed dark purple ink in abstract forms, printing in layers through multiple press runs. I used “ghost” prints to vary orientation and intensity, then added red ink by hand. Mistakes pushed ink outside the intended area, so I trimmed the paper. Though I considered reprinting on a new backing, the studio lacked a plate large enough. Instead, I embraced the idea of removing media and burned away the lower left corner. In 2019, after years of making collages from old work, I revisited the piece. Wanting to preserve but complete it, I added a black backing—both a collage strategy and nod to traditional print framing. This expanded the composition beyond its original bounds. The burned edge and backing highlight themes of layering, movement, and the interplay of addition and removal.
